The 2013 Democracy Biennale event organised by the city of Turin, the third edition, is also taking a look at the environment, energy and smart cities. Held every two years, the five-day event offers public meetings, lectures, debates, readings, international forums, seminars and opportunities for active involvement of local residents.

The leitmotif of the 2013 Biennale is “Utopico.Possibile” – possible utopias – to emphasise the importance of public debate as an essential resource for democracy. The rich program of events ranges from great speeches on utopia to experiences in Africa, regarded as a protagonist of tomorrow’s world.

Other issues under discussion include genetics, GMOs and biodiversity, medicine and well-being, the information society and collective intelligence, bioethics and biopolitics. The Democracy Biennale will also look at cities, which, in utopian fantasies, have always been ideal places. From smart cities to the “baby cities” that offer a social pact for the new generations, what are the goals of the contemporary utopias of the polis?
